The Bark Endeavour, is an authentic replica of HMS Endeavour - which was sailed by Captain James Cook during his scientific expedition of 1768 - has been traditionally built by Whitby craftsmen and is approximately 40% of the ships original size.

Lovers of the original Dracula novel will recognise this place instantly; Whitby Abbey with it's strong Gothic connections and the scene of the Count's downfall.

This is from an original watercolour and is notable for the simplicity of pallet and a delicacy of touch that brings this famous scene to life. It was the view as we walked down into Whitby from Sandsend and looked up to see the iconic abbey overlooking the houses. Is it beautiful or a little sinister with its Gothic associations as the scene of Dracula's last stand?

Fishing Off Whitby Pier, Yorkshire, UK Whenever the tide is coming in at Whitby, there seems to be a lot of fishermen and women taking advantage of the influx of fish heading inland with the tide. The piers of Whitby are four structures along the River Esk estuary in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. Whilst all the piers can be accessed by the general public, the piers were not built as seaside attractions - so called pleasure piers like Redcar, Saltburn or Withernsea, moreover serving a civil purpose, such as ship loading and protecting the harbour. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. Before local government reorganisations in the late 1960s, it was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire

This view is based on a photo I took some years ago when I walked the coast to coast path, but starting here in Whitby rather than Robin Hood Bay. It was a bit misty and grey, so the buildings in the background fade away. If you want to colour it in during lockdown, the main colours are dark red, grey and white, with most of the roofs and many of the walls being the dark red. The town is best known for its connections with Dracula, but it makes an interesting place to visit regardless. Drawn in (dipping) pen and ink on A3 cartridge paper, using a pencil grid to get the rough positions right.

Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Whitby, 199 Steps The 199 Whitby Abbey steps are one challenge visitors to the town cannot resist. They’re one of Whitby's most famous attractions. But, how much do you know about the history of Whitby steps? The first record of the Whitby Abbey steps comes from 1340, but they’re believed to be even older. The steps were originally made from wood. It was not until 1774 that the original wooden steps were replaced with stone from Sneaton.

Whitby is situated on the Yorkshire Coast. To the south lies the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. All these are well within a short drive from Whitby. The nearest city inland is York. From the old town of Whitby, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St. Mary, whose churchyard on Whitby's East Cliff gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his world famous book, Dracula
