The Rationality of Vanity

Around The Bend was influenced by an artwork I saw in a magazine consisting of a set of curved figures in different colours on a white background. I felt it would work well on a more complex background and I’d recently been experimenting with flicking paint onto the canvas using an old toothbrush which gave a matt stone-like effect, so I combined these. My final change to the original was to make the arcs a glossy finish to create a juxtaposition of very random, matt effect, background to very precise glossy foreground features.

A work is based on the arithmetic progression know as the Fibonacci sequence. This work uses the sequence to denote the side length dedicated to each coloured square and as the sequence is 1,1,2,3,5,8,13 etc this increases the side length for each colour in sequence.

The Green Door was created during a period of focus on architectural detail in my paintings. The door is slightly ajar leaving the viewer to wonder what is beyond it and to question whether they have permission to enter. The door looks like it may belong to a chapel with arched brickwork around both it and the adjacent window, and leaded glass also being present. The stone wall contains a range of subtle colour changes and is partially covered by a climbing plant. Original painting: Watercolour on paper 380 x 280mm

This stunning acrylic pour in pink, purple and blue is my first creation of 2021 and a beautiful start to what I hope is a much better year for everyone than 2020.

This acrylic pour painting is in shades of green and blue, with variations of other colours appearing throughout. The beautiful cells of all different sizes remind me of a coral reef, hence the title. I am enjoying the process of acrylic pouring as there is an element of randomness to it, with only limited means of control beyond choice of colours and the fluidity of the paint

This painting is part of a series exploring the relationship between line, shape and colour - a recurring theme in my work over the years. Influenced in part by the work of Mondrian, the series uses bold blocks of colour divided by black lines. Where they differ from Mondrian is in the use of strong 30, 45 and 60 degree angles rather than pure horizontals and verticals. These works also draw on my past experience in engineering drawing, and the beauty of angles in engineered structures.

The State of The Nation was created using a collage of newspaper articles from the time (Jan - Feb 2019) which really summed up what was important to people in the UK according to the popular press. This was overlaid with sprayed and flicked paint in a number of layers of different colours with the final addition being the screaming head!

A bold and modern geometric abstract

A stripy work using optical mixing to make you think there are more than three colours used!

A piece inspired by stained glass windows and made using watercolour to give the translucency and colour variation that would be seen in glass. This is a bold and colourful modern painting that would brighten up any room.

This piece was inspired by the works of Bridget Riley and Carlos Cruz-Diez and was made by applying paint randomly to thick card, then shredding it using an office document shredder and then reassembling it into this design of an orange circle on a blue background. The variation of the colours through the re-combination of the shreddings adds interest and means there is always something new to see.

Watercolour of a farmhouse by a country road in late autumn/early winter. This loose painting has energy and leaves room for viewer interpretation.

This painting is a continuation of my exploration of acrylic pouring, and for this one I thought I'd try using watercolour pigments with the acrylic binder (as both are water based) which yielded some strange results, with some of the colours clumping and others apparently unaffected. This has led to some interesting passages in this painting, which to begin with I didn't like, but as the work dried and settled became more and more beautiful.

A Beautiful Noise

A bold and bright geometric abstract that would look at home in a wide range of settings. My inspiration for this piece was the simple red and white hexagon design of the Umbrella Organisation in the Resident Evil games/movies and I built the rest of the image from there.

The Foolishness of Protectionism series was inspired by an idea from a novel where a character had produced an artwork over hundreds and hundreds of interconnecting sheets of paper....I do not claim to be that obsessed, but eventually this series will consist of 25 panels that if correctly arranged make one larger artwork. Around half the panels have been completed since the project began, and shortly I will be starting work on completion of the remainder. This work was an initial study to trial ideas and colour schemes. Original: Acrylic on paper Painted: April 2016
