Skiddaw Stickers

I was lucky enough to have timed this just right. I had wildcamped the night before round the back o' Skiddaw, and had made an early started followed by a cloud of midges. It was August and a warm still morning. I reached the summit of Skiddaw around 9am and got this stunning view of the surrounding peaks - Blencathra, Hellvellyn and a hint of High Street poking through the mists. I took a whole series of photos, and this painting is the best of that view. Painted in oil on a 20x8 inch board.

Beautiful Skiddaw in the Lake District. They said it was fairly easy to climb but my legs surely disagreed! A perfect postcard for your Cumbria Holidays!

The English Lake District is well known for its stunning views, but here is one that few get to see. The reason is that its from an outlying peak that is rarely visited - Binsey. This is the view back to Skiddaw from around the summit - or rather this is just one half of the view, for it extends to the whole Skiddaw range left of this. This version I have painted in oil on a 24x12 inch board. I have loosely interpreted the fields below rather than painstakingly copying them in order to keep the image fresh.

A badge of honour can be used to show you have accomplished something. Conquering a Lake District fell deserves such a badge!

It's a long hike but it's worth the effort for such a wonderful view...and this is not even the top!

Ashness Bridge, Lake District, Cumbria, UK Ashness Bridge is a traditional stone-built bridge on the single-track road from the Borrowdale road (B5289) to Watendlath, in the English Lake District, Cumbria. The brisge is at grid reference NY270196, and is known for being a fine viewpoint across Borrowdale towards Skiddaw, including views of Derwent Water nearby. It or its predecessor may have been a packhorse bridge conveying packhorse traffic from Watendlath to Keswick. Near the bridge is a small cairn to Bob Graham, who ran a round of 42 Lakeland peaks in 1932 (in under 24 hours), a record which was not equalled for 28 years. This image, originally captured on film in the autumn of 1987, depicts the Ashness Bridge, in the Lake District National Park, in England. This is a popular spot for capturing images, but it has changed over the years as the view across to Skiddaw, the mountain in the distance, is now restricted by the abundance of trees that have grown. This image, therefore, represents an historical view. The bridge is a traditional Lakeland bridge, in that the arch does not contain a keystone. Within the park, there are many 'pack horse' bridges such as this, mostly built during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
