Sand Castle

Built at the GWR’s Swindon Works in 1934 to Charles Collets design, 5029 Nunney Castle was one of a 171 strong class designed to haul the fastest of the GWRs express passenger services. Named for the castle near Frome in Somerset, 5029 spent much of her working life based at Old Oak Common depot in London. The engine moved to Worcester in 1958, then had spells at Newton Abbot and Laira before a final transfer in December 1962 took it to Cardiff East Dock, where it was to remain until being withdrawn along with other members of its class in December 1963.

During the balmy May weather I spend a few late evenings down by the old slate quay looking out across the estuary for the right time to take a colourful water and colour reflection shot... I used vintage glass shot wide open at f/2.0 producing quite a narrow depth of field but maximum light through aperture and with full frame camera focus peaking and focus magnifier to focus as best as can for the Jupiter lens I was using at such shallow depth of field... In doing so producing a softer more subtle - less stark effect to this silhouette of the Caernarfon Castle and surrounding boats... I imagine this framed on archival type watercolour paper for best effect... Something I will endeavour to do over time for my home... :-)

A pathway alongside the moat at Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, as it winds its way between the walls. The castle was built rather late, being started by Sir William ap Thomas in the 1430s. His son, Sir William Herbert, a Knight of the Garter, continued building, creating a home rather than a fortress - though it looks formidable! This was also the boyhood home of Henry Tudor, later Henry VII. During the Civil War the castle was taken by Parliamentary troops and began to fall into disrepair. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
