The old City Bridge spanning the River Itchen in the heart of Winchester, Hampshire. The bridge, also known as St Swithun's Bridge was built in 1813, replacing older ones and is now a Grade 1 listed structure. It spans the clear flowing waters of the River Itchen, one of Britain's notable chalk streams. Behind the bridge is the old City Mill, the present building dating from 1744, replacing older mills on the site. Working commercially until ihe early 1900s, it is now fully restored. The Norman tower of Winchester Cathedral which sits squarely at the crossing point of this beautiful old building. It was typically Norman (and Saxon) to build their great churches in this cruciform plan with a central tower. Here we can see the round-arched Norman windows in the belfry and the transept. The nave windows are of later perpendicular design. The cathedral as we see it dates from 1079 - 1532 and replaced two previous Saxon Minster churches.

Originally founded in 642, the present cathedral was started in 1079 and was consecrated in 1093. The design is typically Norman cruciform with a squat, square tower at the crossing.Each Christmas a market is held with stalls around the cathedral close together with a skating rink. By the Priory Gate to Winchester Cathedral sits this beautiful Medieval group of buildings. On the left is Cheyney Court which dates from the C15th and was once the bishop's court house. It has a mellowed stone ground floor and fine half timbering above with diamond-paned windows. The building next to it was the Cathedral's stable block. Winchester is an ancient city with many similar buildings - and was the capital of Wessex - and England. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

St Cross Hospital lies across the water meadows from Winchester in Hampshire, England. its almshouses provide a living for 25 elderly men. Rising above the almshouses and towering above the meadows is the magnificent Norman church which echoes nearby Winchester Cathedral. This is a lovely, peaceful place and the timelessness has been accentuated in this photograph with toning and texture. Founded between 1132 and 1136, this is the oldest surviving charitable institution in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, grandson of William the Conqueror and younger brother to King Stephen of England. St Cross is also the largest medieval almshouse in Britain!
