Constructed in the 1860s, Brean Down Fort (Somerset, England) is one of the 'Palmerston Forts', a series of fortifications built across the Bristol Channel to protect the approaches to Bristol and Cardiff. Although staffed by 50 officers and men of the Royal Artillery, the fort never saw active service. The fort was decommissioned in 1900 following an explosion in a gunpowder store, when a certain Gunner Haines fired a cartridge down a ventilation shaft in an apparent suicide attempt.
