1968 American Motors Javelin T-Shirts

The 1968 Trans-Am season saw a new competitor in sedan road racing, one that in its rookie year displayed the perfect combination of brute strength, amazing speed and all out stamina. Two race-prepped Javelins were equipped to race in the over-2-liter and under-5-liter engine class which permitted a maximum of 305 cu. in. engine displacement. The Javelins had factory 290 ci V-8 engines that were bored to 304.3 cubic inches to obtain maximum performance within the displacement limit. As a result, the first official American Motors racing team proved that their Javelins could compete with the best of the best in the Trans-Am racing circuit.

American Motors Corporation (AMC; commonly referred to as American Motors) was an American automobile manufacturing company formed by the merger of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and Hudson Motor Car Company on May 1, 1954. At the time, it was the largest corporate merger in U.S. history. Regarded as a small company deft enough to exploit special market segments left untended by the giants, American Motors was widely known for the design work of chief stylist Dick Teague, who had to make do with a much tighter budget than his counterparts at Detroit's Big Three but had a knack for making the most of his employer's investment.

American Motors Corporation (AMC) was an American automobile company formed by the 1954 merger of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and Hudson Motor Car Company. At the time, it was the largest corporate merger in U.S. history. AMC went on to compete with the US Big Three—Ford, General Motors and Chrysler—with its small cars including the Rambler American, Hornet, Gremlin and Pacer; muscle cars including the Marlin, AMX and Javelin; and early four-wheel-drive variants of the Eagle, the U.S. market's first true crossover.

The Gremlin was introduced in 1970 by American Motors as a subcompact two-door model that was marketed as "the first American-built import." Utilizing a shortened Hornet platform, with a stylized hatchback body, the Gremlin's unique styling stuck out among the era's subcompact completion. Added to 1971 models, those who opted for the Gremlin X package were rewarded with a bigger engine, wider tires, and revised slot-style wheels. The interior of the Gremlin X also featured bucket seats from the Javelin, an AM/FM radio, fabric sunroof, tilt steering wheel, inside hood release, and front disk brakes. 1972 models added an available 304 cu in V8 engine, following the muscle car formula of stuffing a big motor in a small car.
