Straight out of Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's storybook "Alice in Wonderland" is depicted a cartoon re-imagining of the scene where Alice meets the caterpillar, who is smoking a hookah atop a giant mushroom.

From one of the earliest versions of the book, this illustration shows Alice and the caterpillar. The drawing is done in color.

I messed up a beautiful painting of blue Irises by Vincent Van Gogh to add in a few characters from a very early copy of Alice in Wonderland. The pictures from the early copy of the book were wildly painted. The colors seemed to bleed into one another in the oddest of places. Well, for other oddballs like me, maybe you’ll appreciate this one.

This design has Russian origins, featuring 'Alice and the Caterpillar' and 'Alice and the Cheshire Cat' with English verse. The original book cover dated 1911 is gilded on canvas.
