The old quarter of Almeria City below the Moorish castle, the Alcazaba, is a maze of narrow streets with attractive old buildings painted in bright colours. Here and in the neighbouring gypsy quarter, La Chanca, there are numerous interesting street scene which provide colourful compositions for paintings. I think this street is Calle del Plátano but I forgot to check the name. I would like to do a series of paintings around here and La Chanca so I hope there will be some interest in them. The fishing port of Almeria. I like the soft, early morning light for this subject. I can capture the reflections of the boats in the calm water before the breeze gets up. Although not as sharply defined as in the afternoon light the Moorish castle Alcazaba and the church of San Roque make a great backdrop. This wooden door belongs to an old, ruinous house in the little village of Los Molinos del Rio Aguas near Sorbas, Almeria. I thought it would make an interesting subject to paint with the pots of aloe vera on the doorstep and the overhanging, flowering climber, but it was a difficult subject to capture in watercolour as there are so many different textures here with the old walls, wooden door, pots and plants. Also the light was tricky. There is a small, organic and ecological farming community in the village. I guess the aloe vera must have been put here by them. This small scrapyard is on the edge of the pretty village of Almocíta in La Alpujarra Almeriense with the Sierra de Gador behind. Whenever I visit Almocita, I always make a detour to look at this fascinating collection of old vehicles and machinery and the little red plane must have a story to tell. I saw this lovely old Chevrolet six parked with a few other American vintage cars in Benahadux, Almeria, Spain on Saturday.

I love drawing and painting old, wooden fishing boats. The shapes, colours and textures are inspiring and, when the sea is calm, one can capture the reflections of the boats in the water. These little boats were moored in the fishing port of Almeria. The composition and viewpoint is rather unusual but I wanted to focus on the boats rather than paint a general harbour scene. Hortichuelas is a little village just 2km inland from where I live in Las Negras on the coast. Earlier this week I walked around the village looking for rural scenes with wild flowers to paint but I found this composition in the “main street” with the flower pots and village cats and, although I do not think it is a very commercial subject, I wanted to paint it.
