Antibodies in action. Artwork of antibodies (light to dark pink) in blood attacking an invading bacterium (left) and virus particle (centre right, green). Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins made by the immune system in response to infection by bacteria, viruses or allergens. Each antibody is made to recognise a specific target antigen and bind themselves to the surface. Binding can neutralize toxins or invading organisms and prevent them from interfering with normal cell processes. Binding can also make it easier for white blood cells to recognise and digest foreign particles.

The macrophage, when activated, will engulf (phagocytose) the bacteria and destroy them as part of the body's immune response. M. tuberculosis causes the disease tuberculosis. It infects the lungs creating primary tubercles, nodular lesions of dead tissue and bacteria. The bacteria may enter the blood or lymph systems and spread to other organs of the body. Tuberculosis is spread by coughs and sneezes.

Some strains produce a toxin that causes severe diarrhoea and can be fatal, especially in the very young or elderly. The blebs surrounding the cell wall here are extra cellular material shed by the bacterium. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes enclosing the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include intense headache, fever, loss of appetite, intolerance of light and sound, muscle rigidity and, in severe cases, convulsions, vomiting and delirium leading to death. Staphylococcus aureus commonly occurs on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. It may, however, become pathogenic. The bacterium bathes

This bacterium was isolated from the human intestine and is normally a part of the human and animal microbiota. Most E. coli strains are harmless, but some strains can cause serious problems such as food poisoning, urinary tract infections, traveller's diarrhea and nosocomial infections. The E. coli 0157:H7 strain is fatal to humans if contracted when contaminated meat is cooked inadequately. Magnification: x8,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.

This Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium is found in soil, water and as normal flora in the human intestine. However, it can cause serious wound, lung, skin and urinary tract infections, particularly in hospital patients. It produces extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), a sticky slime-like substance that enables it to grow in large masses (biofilms) and resist antibacterial agents such as antibiotics. These spirochaete (spiral-shaped) bacteria are passed to humans through the bites of infected Ixodes sp. ticks. Symptoms of Lyme disease include skin lesions, muscle pain, neurological and cardiac abnormalities, and arthritis. Treatments include antibiotic and corticosteroid drugs.

Many species of Staphylococcus cause disease in man through secretion of exotoxins: S. aureus is commonly present on skin and mucous membranes and causes boils and internal abscesses, and is the commonest cause of pyogenic (pus-forming) infections in man. Other species produce toxins causing food poisoning. Unfortunately bacteria have an incredible bad reputation as they are concerned in severe illness and other gross stuff. But don´t forget all of us carry myriads of essential intestinal bacteria in our system where they even provide our health.
