Habitat loss and the illegal pet trade have been factors in the decline of this species. Prior to the ban on international trade of tamarins in 1976, tens of thousands of them were exported for biomedical research. These highly social monkeys live in small familial groups in trees with foliage cover. They spend the day foraging, resting, travelling, and grooming, always on the lookout for potential predators. The cotton top tamarin has a unique appearance due to the long sagittal crest, or long white hairs which flow from their foreheads down to the base of the neck, and bare black faces (although in juveniles as seen here their faces have more fur). They have long fur on their bodies which is white underneath and a greyish brown on their backs.

I captured this photograph of a Golden Lion Tamarin whilst on holiday to Tenerife we visited Loro Parque the Animal Embassy. I love his little face and eyes surrounded by that bright orange fur.
