Roaming the Great Plains, the bison is an icon of the American West. Its massive size & ambling gait can make it quite a traffic obstruction too! If you've ever driven the Black Hills, Custer State Park or Yellowstone National Park, you've likely seen long lines of cars following a herd of buffalo in no hurry at all. These traffic jams let you look from a safe distance, but it's all too common to see a tourist get far too close in search of a photo. While our parks do their best to educate tourists on wildlife safety, you can also do your part (in a slightly less tactful way). Inspired by Yellowstone's famous buffalo PSA posters, this western gift is a fun reminder to stay away from these 2000lb bovines that can run 3x faster than you can.

To see wildlife at Custer State Park in South Dakota, one simply needs to drive the 18 mile (paved) Wildlife Loop. We saw a large number of Bison, or American Buffalo, Pronghorn Antelope, Burros, Big Horn Sheep and Wild Turkey on our evening drive. The majority of them were on a dirt road that leaves the main loop trail as this one was. Most of them were slowly moving along as they grazed but then this one decided it was time for a jog!! Everyone gave it the room it needed to come through and make its way to the other side! .....................................................................................
