I have been a fan of Doctor who since the 70s. Over the past few years i have done a series of Paintings from Space and time to pop art splat. This is part of the Pop Art series which is based on the swirl of the time vortex. The original painting that these images come from are much bigger and in a Wide screen style. To use these for T shirts etc I have cropped the design and modified them from my original paintings.

What if someone called the Ghostbusters on Eric Draven?

Over the last week as I worked on this portrait, I debated with myself over what to title this one. Initially, I was going to go with 'The Madman.' Then I considered 'The Dichotomy' because the 11th Doctor was both young and old. 'The Hipster' because his aesthetic style sort of reflected the current hipster trends. 'The Chin' because that's what several characters called him. And a few others. I landed on 'The Promise.' The longest running narrative thread in Doctor Who is the title. Nobody knows the Doctor's real name (save River Song and one other person, which I assume is his first wife). It's sort of a running (meta)joke where characters often ask, 'Doctor? Doctor who?' Well, at the end of the series 7 finale, 'The Name of the D...

There's this short moment at the end of the two-part story Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead. Both Donna and the Doctor have experienced deep loss. Donna lost her stuttering husband she met while in the fake reality of the library planet's hard drive. And the Doctor lost River Song, a stranger who knew his name and clearly had a heavy and major impact on his future. Donna asks the Doctor if he's alright. He responds with "I'm always alright." And Donna asks if that's time lord code for "really not alright." The Doctor asks why and Donna says in a somber tone, "Because I'm alright too." The dialogue is striking and heavy, because the implication of their shared pain is tangible in their faces even though they are saying ...
