Valeria Messalina (c. 17/20–48) was the third wife of Roman emperor Claudius. She was a paternal cousin of Emperor Nero, a second cousin of Emperor Caligula, and a great-grandniece of Emperor Augustus. A powerful and influential woman with a reputation for promiscuity, she allegedly conspired against her husband and was executed on the discovery of the plot. Her notorious reputation probably resulted from political bias, but works of art and literature have perpetuated it into modern times.

We couldn’t think of anyone better to portray The Empress in our Ghoulish Edition of the card than a sexy, seductive vampiress. Above her head sits a crown of twelve stars, representing the twelve zodiac signs and signifying her connection to the metaphysical realm. She is positioned in an open space within nature to express her connection to the natural realm. The seductive manner of her body accompanied by the symbol of Venus around her neck suggests that this vampiress possesses characteristics of feminine fertility and sexuality. This is further embodied in the red shade of the chaise on which she sits. In her right hand, she holds an orb-shaped glass filled with the blood of her most recent victim.
