Flowerhead T-Shirts

This work is made by my grandfather, illustrator Friso Henstra (1928-2013) It is a bookcover for the book 'Pan' by Nobelprice winner Knut Hamsun. Friso Henstra was an artist from the Netherlands and mostly famous in the US for his illustrations for children's books in the 70's and 80's. His style was original and sometimes a bit psychedelic.

Close-up of the Goatsbeard (Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon) Tragopogon pratensis flowerhead before it earns its folk law name and closes up for the afternoon and evening. More commonly known as Salsify, this beautiful wildflower grows on poor soils alongside footpaths and across meadows. When the head turns to seed, it produces a spectacular ball of ‘parachute’ supported seeds, ready to be distributed by a convenient breeze.
