This narrow, cobbled street in the centre of old Granada runs alongside the Rio Darro from the Plaza Nueva. Beautiful, old buildings in the Albaycin line one side of the street and there are more above the other side of the river dominated by the the fabulous Alhambra. This is one of my favourite places to paint in Granada. There are many interesting compositions looking up and down the street. Perfect for watercolours. I didn't actually get around to sketching a map until after the maps that I made subsequently began to garner positive press. Last week I visited Granada as it would be the last opportunity to paint scenes from the City until September. It is too hot to visit Granada in July and August but also the white, hazy light of high summer is not ideal for painting. In June though the light can be clear and intense and the colours in the city very rich, particularly the greens of the city’s trees. I looked for different compositions from the usual views so I strolled up the Sacromonte hill, the old gypsy quarter adjacent to the Albaicin, and found this perfect composition of Calle Enmedio Alta with the towers of the Alhambra behind. This is painted from a tiny square, Placeta Nevot, in the old Moorish quarter of Granada, the Albaicin. The old buildings here make wonderful subjects and where narrow, cobbled streets meet in this little placeta there is an excellent view looking across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. Looking over Granada to the distant mountains from the gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Spain. The Moorish Alhambra or "Red Castle" originates from the 9th century and apparently became a royal palace in the 13th century. It passed into Christian hands when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered Granada in 1492. This was the home of the young Katherine of Aragon before her marriage to Prince Arthur of England and subsequently Prince Henry (later Henry VIII) following Arthur's death.

Wandering around the narrow, cobbled streets on the Sacromonte hill in old Granada I always come across little compositions which are a joy to paint. This colourful patio in front of one of the cave houses is typical. The decorations and the blue paint reflect the Moorish origins of this fascinating, ancient quarter of this lovely City. This is the final painting from my last visit to Granada at the end of November. This street, Cuesta Chapiz, runs down to the Rio Darro from the top of the old city. It divides the historic quarters, the Albaicin on the right from Sacromonte on the left and looks across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. It is a wonderful subject to paint in watercolour, particularly with the beautiful soft light and colours of late autumn. The attractive old buildings are also a pleasure to draw. I love painting the narrow, cobbled streets in old Granada. The Fountain Of The Poppy is located in one of the highest streets in Sacromonte, near the city walls and where many of the houses are cave dwellings.

This watercolor painting is from the garden of the Mezquita, in the Albaicin, Granada, Spain looking out to the Alhambra Palace and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. I have focussed here on capturing the Alhambra with the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada behind. The perfect gift for Nova owner and enthusiast

Plaza Bib Rambla. I have painted this lovely square in the centre of Granada several times. At the heart of the “Christian” part of the city it is surrounded by beautiful 19th Century buildings and overlooked by the great Cathedral nearby. It is a lined with cafe’s and shops along the sidewalks and is a pretty spot in summer with its leafy lime trees and flowers around the central fountain adding to colour of the visitors strolling around.
