A Hand of Glory is the dried and pickled hand of a male person who has been hanged, often specified as being the left hand, or, if the man was hanged for murder, the hand that did the deed. Hand of Glory combined with a candle made from fat from the corpse of the same malefactor who died on the gallows would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented. It is a fascinating and macabre historical practice that has inspired a lot of 19th century stories. I have shown the hand of glory with a cute little red snake wrapped around it and an eyeball in the palm. I do enjoy drawing eyeballs... This design was hand drawn, ink on paper, and finished digitally.

The Hand Of Glory design is inspired by the 18th Century folklore belief in the power of the Hand Of Glory, the dried and pickled hand of a male person who has been hanged. By combining the hand with a candle made from fat from the corpse of the same malefactor who died on the gallows, it is believed that it can render motionless all those who are presented with it, and even has the power to unlock any door. Descriptions of how to make and use the Hand Of Glory were found in the 18th-century grimoire Petit Albert and the Compendium Maleficarum.

Back in the 18th century there was a belief among criminals that if you cut off the hand of an executed criminal and put a burning candle in its hand, that you could burgle a house and the hand would keep the occupants asleep (as long as the candle stayed lit!) while you made off with their valuables
