The USS Vengeance was a 23rd century Federation Dreadnought-class starship operated in secret by Starfleet via Section 31. Unlike other ships owned by the Federation and operated by Starfleet, it was created specifically for combat and was completely unmarked, with no registry number or nomenclature visible on the hull. The ship was commissioned in 2259 and it was launched from the Io Facility starbase, a spacedock in orbit of the Jovian moon Io. Its first, and only, commanding officer was Admiral Alexander Marcus. As of 2263, it was by far the largest ship operated by Starfleet.

It has a diameter of around 140,000 kilometres, more than ten times that of Earth. It is a gas giant and is mostly hydrogen and helium. Juno arrived at Jupiter in July 2016. Its mission is to orbit Jupiter over the following year, gathering information about the planet's atmosphere, magnetic field and gravitational field. IO Jupiter’s fifth moon, Io, is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. Io has more than 400 active volcanoes with average height of 6km on its surface. Plumes of sulfur spew upward as high as 300 kilometers. The surface of Io is splotched with lava lakes and floodplains of liquid rock. Io's atmosphere is made primarily of sulfur. Temperatures on Io vary from extremely hot to extremely cold. Areas which feature volcanic activity can reach temperatures of over 2000C, away from these areas however will see temperatures plunge to -143C.
