Northern Exposure

Olstind Mountain aglow in the pink of a January sunrise in the Arctic. The sun hardly got over the horizon, but for the two hours that it sat there, it turned everything an otherworldly pink colour. It really was a sight to see.

We got very excited on the last night of our recent trip to Lofoten because it looked like everything was coming together. The sky was clear, the northern horizon was starting to glow green...and then this happened. Luckily we got a few beams before the clouds completely covered them up again!

Northern Exposure

Wow. What else can I say to describe what it was like to be in Reine on this winter morning? After a few mornings of cloud, it finally cleared and we were treated to two continuous hours of sunset, with beautiful oranges and yellows to the south and pinks to the north. Just stunning. The first time I saw the northern lights, they appeared as a dim green line across the sky. The second time I saw the northern lights, in Inari, Finland, they danced across the entire northern sky. It was amazing...and a slightly better view than the naked Finnish men in front of the sauna nearby! You Are Stronger Than You Think

I was lucky enough to see the northern lights many times while I was in Finland last year. One of the most memorable nights I had was the one I spent in a glass igloo at Hotel Kakslauttanen in Finnish Lapland. Not only did I not have to go outside in the -38ºC temperatures, but I could just adjust my bed to the perfect angle and watch them from bed! I was lucky enough to see auroral coronas on two different occasions -- first during the St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm, and then again during another storm on March 29. Unfortunately I had a very wobbly tripod -- a replacement that couldn't handle the weight of my D700 and 24-70 f/2.8 lens, but it could lock in place which was more than my original (and stuck) tripod head could do -- so this was one of the few shots I was able to aim at the sky with any result at all.

Morning in Nusfjord -- the lapping of the waves against the rocks, the cawing of seagulls, the absence of vehicles and busloads of visitors. It's a wonderful place to wake up and start the day. The aurora seems to fall towards the earth in the western sky over Galdotieva in far northwest Finnish Lapland. Taken at the end of March 2013 near full moon.

This shot was from a very fun steel wool burning session under the Story Bridge in Captain Burke Park. This one is being spun above Anita's head rather than out in front of her.
