The Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), also known as the Asian tapir, is a large, herbivorous mammal that is native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. It is the only extant species in the family Tapiridae and the only extant species in the genus Tapirus. The Malayan tapir is characterised by its black and white colouration, which helps it to blend into its forest surroundings. It has a long, prehensile proboscis, which it uses to grab branches and leaves as it forages. The Malayan tapir is endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation and poaching.
