The Continental Bar in Manhattan’s East Village first opened as a live music bar way back in 1991 and played host to legendary NYC punk rockers, but in 2006 the stage was replaced with leather booths which started a clear path to living out its remaining days as a dive bar. The single biggest draw was probably the “5 shots of anything for $10 deal” which ran counter to the owner’s attempts at making it a “classy dive bar.” Nonetheless, location goes a long way in business and despite all kinds of bad press and equally bad reviews, it was packed almost every night until it’s final demise at the end of 2018.

Taking cues from other NYC roadhouse-style bars, this Financial District saloon opened its doors in 2009 and made its bartenders the main event. The Horse's all-female cast of booze slingers was known for entertaining feats including bar-top dancing, fire-blowing, and hula-hooping, all while serving cheap drinks. The Iron Horse had a full menu that included your typical bar fare, and if you went on a Sunday, burgers and hot dogs were on the house when you bought a drink.

New York’s Red Rock West could have been Coyote Ugly’s truly ugly, possibly inbred cousin. With an obvious cowboy roadhouse type vibe accented with the stench of stale beer and a Harley riding (or wannabe riding) clientele and tables with no chairs, Red Rock West Saloon was not your typical NYC nightspot to say the least. However, any shortcomings were quickly overlooked as the bartenders were hot and very much known for putting on an engaging show with plenty of audience interaction, again, think Coyote Ugly.

Located off West 166th Street in New York City's Bronx neighborhood, El Sol Bar was a popular local watering hole for decades. Despite appearances, this place wasn't just another dive bar, but a restaurant with a full kitchen giving Puerto Ricans a taste of home with authentic dishes like Alcapurrias and Arroz Con Dulce just like mom used to make.

A whole generation of folks probably know Betty Jane Tavern just from the t-shirt worn by camp counselor Gary in the 2001 satirical comedy film, Wet Hot American Summer, but it was an actual place. Betty Jane Tavern existed in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, home of the largest freshwater lake in the state, covering about 4 square miles in area. Playing off the heavy influence of the Lenni Lenape tribe of the area, Betty Jane Tavern advertised having the 'best firewater in Lake Hopatcong.' Whether you were looking for a stiff drink or a hot meal, Betty Jane was there for you throughout the '70s and '80s.

First opening their doors in 1999, Burt's Tiki Lounge combined a dark, moody vibe with a serious bric-a-brac fetish, eclectic live music, and tropical drinks to create a bizarre oasis in Albuquerque‎, New Mexico. Countless acts performed at Burt's and it even made a couple of appearances on Breaking Bad. It was a true southwestern original with few contemporaries, but sadly, Burt's folded after 17 years not too long after moving to a new location which failed to capture the beloved dive bar tiki vibe of the original.

Whether you went to college in New Brunswick, New Jersey, or Tucson, Arizona, odds are you knew Greasy Tony's well. From the original location in Jersey in '68 to the AZ location that opened in '78, Greasy Tony's served up consistent cheese steaks, hoagies, and pizza for decades until founder Tony Giorgianni died in 2008. Both locations were total dives that spoke to the kind of food they served, and that's exactly how people liked it. Whether you were there between classes for a quick bite or bombed out of your mind at 3am and in need of sustenance to stave off alcohol poisoning, Greasy Tony was there for you.

Daddy-O was a great West Village beatnik dive bar known for serving regional food from western New York and for being a favorite hangout spot for local chefs. A whiskey lover's paradise, and also the only local place to get a Rochester style 'garbage plate.' Closed but not forgotten! Great gift for West Villagers and Whiskey lovers. Great nostalgic gift for New Yorkers.

Inn-Square Men's Bar in Cambridge, Massachusetts originally started as a men’s only bar (yes, that was a thing) back in 1964. It was as a favorite watering hole for local public works employees, who practically kept the place in business on their own. In the '70s, the bar was sold, and while it was still called the Inn-Square Men's Bar, they added a little 'ladies invited' under the name, and it soon evolved into one of the most well-loved music venues in town. The Inn-Square was a small, warm neighborhood bar with great taste in music, featuring both local and national bands that might otherwise not get to play. Despite the bar's second act being a huge success, the Inn's liquor license wasn't renewed in 1984, bringing an end to the bar.
