Introduced in 1883, RGB was a New York beer that held 35 percent of the state's beer market at its peak. According to the New York Times, "Once a top New York brew guzzled regularly by a loyal cadre of workingmen who would just as soon have eaten nails as drink another beer maker's suds." RGB ceased operations in 1976, when they were unable to compete with the large national breweries, as corporate consolidation and the rise of national breweries led to the demise of dozens of regional breweries.

The original Fred Koch Brewery was a small, independent brewery in Dunkirk, New York that produced beer and ale from late 1888 until 1985. Production peaked in the early 1950s with over 100,000 barrels brewed annually. When the Dunkirk, New York brewery was closed in 1985, it was located at 15-25 West Courtney Street. The Genesee Brewing Company currently owns the trademark rights to the name Fred Koch Brewery, but it is not producing any products under the Koch's name. Note added 9/1/18: A non-alcoholic beer "Penn's Best" is currently available and is labeled Fred Koch Brewing Co, Rochester NY.

Rheingold Brewery was a New York state brewery which sold Rheingold Beer from 1883, holding 35 percent of the state's beer market at its peak. The company was sold by the founding Jewish American Liebmann family in 1963. According to The New York Times, "Rheingold Beer was once a top New York brew guzzled regularly by a loyal cadre of workingmen who would just as soon have eaten nails as drink another beer maker's suds." In 1966 it introduced Gablinger's Beer, one of the first reduced calorie beers, which was brewed using a process originated by chemist Dr. Hersch Gablinger of Basel, Switzerland.

Magnus Beck Brewing Co. Inc. opened in 1933 and closed in 1955 it was open for 22 years. Items from breweries of this age tend to be more common and less valuable than some breweries. Early items can still be valuable as can rarer types of items. Becks Brewing was active during Prohibition which makes it an oddity. Some breweries were able to stay in business by producing "near-beer" which was very low alcohol, some switched over to bottling sodas or other beverages, some became Ice-houses or other related businesses. Magnus Beck Brewing Co. Inc. was in an active brewing city. Buffalo, NY was listed as having 50 breweries, which is quite a few.

As far as Albany goes, we do know that Prussian-born Frederick Hinckel and Bavarian-born John Hedrick both opened breweries in Albany in 1852, the earliest Central European immigrant-owned breweries in the city. What we don't know is if those breweries opened as ale breweries or lager breweries. They may have been brewing Bavarian-style Weiss Bier. As the 1850s wore on, circumstantial references to lager brewing in Albany appears, but nothing noting a named brewery. In 1857, Templeton's—a furniture store on Albany's main drag, Broadway, advertised refrigerators for sale. Suitable for, as the ad expresses, "Grocers, Butchers, and Lager Beer purposes."

The Dobler Brewing Company was a small regional brewery, located in Albany, New York. Dobler was once located in the largest brewing hub in the country. Before there was Anheuser-Busch, Coors, and Miller, there was J.F. Hedrick, Beverwyck Brewery, and of course Dobler. It was founded in 1865, and had an annual capacity of 25,000 barrels during its height.

Founder of The Bechtel Brewing Company in New York City, George Bechtel was truly one of the great Beer Pioneers while also championing his home of Staten Island and excellent causes including civil rights, worker’s rights and animal rights.
