Mementos of the life and passions of the dead are often represented in elaborate reconstructions of a favorite activity or pastime, such as a day's outing to the beach in the car.

Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican festival of the dead that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with All Souls Day on the Catholic calendar of feast days, and the celebration of Halloween.

Day of the Dead altars (Dia de los Muertos Ofrendas) are erected by family members in early November to remember and memorialize family members and friends who have passed away.

A day of the dead altar always contains skulls and skeletons to represent dearly departed family members. Death in all is horror is confronted head-on in this Mexican festival of the dead.

Marigolds are featured on most Day of the Dead altars. The flower is native to Mexico and is hardy and easy to grow so readily available.

Sometimes the Day of the Dead altar will represent how the deceased met their end, for example, in a car accident.

The fear of death is confronted head-on in the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos. There is no covering up of the fact that our flesh falls away and we are reduced to bones and dust. Deceased family members are not represented in how they looked in life, but rather as how they now look as they rest in their graves.

Day of the Dead altars typically feature skulls, marigolds, food, drinks and mementos of family members who have died.

Marigolds bring color and joy to the Day of the Dead Altar. The celebration is one of joy rather than sadness.

The Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead has its roots in Aztec traditions which were merged with the celebration of the Catholic feast day of All Souls Day, which is celebrated on the Catholic calendar on November 2nd.

Those left behind are comforted by constructing a reenactment of a fun celebration with their deceased loved-ones. A party atmosphere is created to help ease the pain of grief, and rather than focusing on sad memories, happy memories are conjured up.

Day of the Dead altars characterize the lives of the deceased, using favorite mementos and favorite food and drink of dead family members.

In remembering family and friends who have died, there's a chance that some tequila may be imbibed. Even the deceased may experience a bit of a hangover.

People sometimes die around a significant event in their lives, such as a recent wedding. The living may memorialize such a sad passing by recreating the deceased bride in her wedding dress.
