PMDD was recognised as a serious illness in the DSM-5 in 2013 and the ICD-11 in 2022. In order to meet the critieria for diagnosis, symptoms must occur during the luteal phase and cause significant distress. While PMDD symptoms may appear to overlap with bipolar and depression, they are generally ameliorated between the first and last day of a period. Symptoms that linger longer than that may point to other conditions and/or comorbidities.
