This triptych tells the story of an octopus learning how to ski. If you've ever learned how to ski, then you know how he feels. His main challenge is obviously having to control six skis. We were jokingly saying that these paintings also tell the story of what happens when you've had one beer at the ski lodge, two beers, and then three beers. I call it Talkeetna Retreat, referring to the airplane retreating from the storm, but also because Talkeetna is a place where I often go to take a relaxing retreat from real life. I was walking back to my cabin from McCarthy around midnight on Solstice Eve, and stopped at the view point along the road. The wild roses had just bloomed, and I took a photo of them with the sunset, mountains, glaciers, and McCarthy Creek in the background. I was about to board a boat to cross Kachemak Bay when I noticed the dramatic light hitting the Inua boat in the Homer boat harbor. The storm cloud was passing by, creating this surreal effect.
