Historically, river otters could be found throughout New York State, but they drastically declined due to unregulated hunting, habitat destruction, and pollution. By the early '90s, the river otter was only found in the eastern half of the state, and a plan was put in place to change that. The New York River Otter Project was a public/private effort that helped bring river otters back to Western New York. With the help of volunteers and state environmental staff, between 1995 and 2000, over 280 otters were relocated from Eastern New York to 16 different sites across the western part of the state. The New York River Otter Project is considered one of the most successful otter restoration projects ever, as populations continue to thrive.

Also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey that was seriously endangered by effects of pesticides in mid-20th century; since DDT and related pesticides were banned in 1972, Ospreys have made a good comeback in many parts of North America. Found near water, either fresh or salt, where large numbers of fish are present. May be most common around major coastal estuaries and salt marshes, but also regular around large lakes, reservoirs, rivers. Migrating Ospreys are sometimes seen far from water, even over the desert.

A jaguar (panthera onca) peers out through foliage on the side of the Paraguay River in the northern Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The facial injuries are very fresh, caused possibly by another jaguar, or by its intended prey (mostly caiman and capybara) disagreeing with its choice of lunch menu: the pattern of wounds suggests a caiman bite. Big cats recover quickly from injuries such as these: seen later in the day, the wounds were covered in dust and scarcely visible.
