This is where the River Thames makes its way between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills - this stretch being known as the Goring Gap. A variety of boats are found here - launches, racing boats, canoes, kayaks - and sailing boats. Seen on a bright summer day on a walk along the Thames Path National Trail which stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier.

A Thames sailing barge of the type once common around the Thames estuary and England's East Coast. Being flat bottomed with a shallow draft of only two and a half feet they could sail into the creeks and inlets around the Thames estuary to carry goods. The collapsible main mast allowed them to sail under bridges.They were also very stable and possessed cargo space above and below deck.

An old Oxford college barge under the trees in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid-1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

The River Thames as it flows between the villages of Streatley in Berkshire, England to the south and Goring in Oxfordshire to the north. This is a break between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. This is the view looking west from the bridge. Moored on the left is one of the old Oxford College barges - now an events venue for the hotel on the river bank. To the right the Thames rushes over the weir, boats passing through the lock. On his retirement from the Bank of England in 1908, Kenneth Grahame returned to Blewbury in Berkshire, the county in which he had grown up. In October that year he published The Wind in the Willows, a novel for children featuring an array of anthropomorphic characters, including Rat (a water vole), Mole, Toad, and Badger. Toad lives in a house on the edge of the River Bank, Toad Hall. Grahame's description of Toad Hall is sparse: "a handsome, dignified old house of mellowed red brick, with well-kept lawns reaching down to the water's edge".

I found an old sepia photo of the construction of Tower Bridge in The Thames Police Museum, and asked to turn it into a painting. I only had the stern of the ship. After research in the London Docklands museum, with the help of the curator, we found that a ship called the 'SS Ruahine' may have been up there during this period, so I was able to paint the whole ship from a very faded photo of her. It also shows the local boys nicknamed, The Mudlarks, playing in the dity Thames water, and a Police rowing galley with three officers nearby. A very detailed painting on a 100 by 80 cm canvas in oil. It took months to complete, but now you can enjoy it in print, a little bit of London's history not to be missed captured in oils.
