Route 66 in the form of the New Mexico flag. From the State of New Mexico: it is a modern interpretation of an ancient symbol of a sun design as seen on a late 19th century water jar from Zia Pueblo. The red sun symbol was called a “Zia” and is shown on a field of yellow. This distinctive design reflects the pueblo’s tribal philosophy, with its wealth of pantheistic spiritualism teaching the basic harmony of all things in the universe. Four is the sacred number of Zia, and the figure is composed of a circle from which four points radiate.

A classic car can be seen in the garage of one of the rooms in the Blue Swallow Motor Court in Tucumcari New Mexico. This vintage motel is vestige of Route 66's glory days.

Route 66 travelers who have passed through New Mexico surely recognize the landmark neon sign for the Sun ‘n Sand Motel that has stood along the side of the highway in Santa Rosa since the early '50s. The motel itself was built in 1952 and largely remained unchanged until it was updated and remodeled in 1998, but ended up closing down in 2012.

The Blue Swallow Motor Court is a shining gem in the crown of what was once The Mother Road. If you're going to stay the night in Tucumcari you'd be hard pressed to find a better or more authentic place to do it.

Another oft photographed relic of route 66 is this decaying Chevrolet Apache. It sits outside what was formerly knows as The Ranch House among other names. Like The Mother Road itself this truck is being slowly reclaimed by nature.

This rusty Packard is from 1948, 49 or 50 and was spotted off of Route 66 in New Mexico.
