On the same day Parisian experimental composer Pierre Schaeffer (Dustin Hoffman) coins the biggest philosophical term of his career, he learns that his wife, R. Murray Schaefer (Meryl Streep), is leaving him and their young son, Paul Shaffer (Justin Henry).
