The Bowtie 327-cubic inch V8 originated with the small-block family of engines that first appeared in 1955 with a 265 cubic inch power plant. Following with a 283 cubic inch version that appeared in 1957, the mighty 327-inch small block made its debut in 1962. Although the 327 was eventually superseded by the 350 across the entire product line, the intermediate displacement 327 was used in just about every model on the market between 1962 and 1969. During its eight-year run, the potent 327 became known among small-block aficionados as the “mighty mouse" as it was extremely compact, highly efficient, and very powerful.

The new-for-'62 Chevy II was based around a new series of small engines, but engineers included enough space to fit a small-block V-8 which of course, is what every hot rodder wants in a lightweight, compact car like the Nova. For $1,500 one could install a small-block V-8 in any 1962 or '63 Chevy II, from the cheapest two-door sedan to the top-of-the-line Nova 400 convertible. Seeing buyers upgrading to V8 power, Chevrolet eventually relented, offering special a 170-hp 283 and 250-hp 327 engines for the Chevy II. With more ponies under the hood, these lightweight cars were not only spirited drivers, but made for excellent street racers that could hold their own against the big boys and even dominate with some upgrades and tuning.

The Bicentennial signaled the end of Valiant's sixteen years in production in the US. Fun Fact: In 1976 the Valiant became available for law enforcement (with mixed success)...

As the storm clouds of the gas crisis started to rise in the early 70s, Valiant shifted it's advertising away from strictly performance and toward build quality.
