The history of Bolens snowmobiles begins with another manufacturer, called Hus-Ski Limited from Pointe-Claire, Quebec. Hus-Ski built their first prototypes in 1957, but unlike traditional snowmobiles, Hus-Ski's design was a radical twin-track setup that was front driven. The tracks with the engine on top looked like a garden tractor, and the rider sat on a sled trailer behind the machine. Bolens purchased Hus-Ski Limited in 1965 and moved the production from Canada to Port Washington, Wisconsin. The Hus-Ski line was further refined and rebranded by Bolens and quickly became a top-selling snow machine, as the tow tractor configuration allowed multiple sleds to be daisy-chained together as needed to haul loads of various sizes.

The Aktiv Fischer Snow Trac is a tracked vehicle, which was manufactured from 1957 to 1981 in Sweden. It runs on two rubber tracks powered by an air cooled flat 4 industrial boxer style engines and is suitable for both deep snow and soft surface use. The engine developed about 40 horsepower, but that varied from year to year as the earlier models developed 36 hp, and later models developed 54 hp. With a length of approximately 12' and width of 6'2" the vehicle is the size of a small car. In the standard cabin configuration, only the driver is facing forward. The interior is equipped with side-facing bench seats and there are enough seats for 7 people (including the driver). The entrance is by a door attached at the tail.

Virgil D. White fabricated his first Model T winter car conversion in 1913 at his car dealership in Ossipee, New Hampshire. Four years later, he had refined the design to a point that he had it patented, but ever the perfectionist, he continued to perfect his invention, eventually coining the name 'snowmobile' and taking it to market in 1922. Initially offered as a kit, the snowmobile package included a heavy-duty truck rear axle, a 7-to-1 truck worm gear drive line attached to the frame by a pair of cantilevered semi-elliptical springs, heavy-duty wheels, a set of metal tracks, and up front, a set of skis. With skis removed, and front wheels installed; the Snowmobile became a Sandmobile, useful for transport through deep mud and sand.

Based in Ogden, Utah, Thiokol’s namesake product was a stinky compound that clogged laboratory sinks and was resistant to any kind of solvent that turned out to be synthetic rubber used in solid-fuel rockets. Thiokol also built ski lifts as post WWII, it was a rush to build ski areas everywhere it snowed. As they strung up poles with pulleys and suspended chairs, they saw a clear need for a vehicle that could both shuttle staff, and groom trails at the same time, so before you know it, they were in the snowcat business. Thiokol Snowcat’s included the Imp, Super-Imp, and Spryte, as well as a heavy-duty version called the Juggernaut, a four-tracked design similar to the Tucker Sno-Cat that could accommodate heavy equipment like drilling rigs.
