This is Levi, three weeks old. The hands belong to his five big brothers: Jacob (18), Joshua (16), Johnny (13), Hudson (6) and Reilly (3). It is the cutest thing to have your teenage boys argue over whose turn it is to hold the baby... that's when they can get him away from ME, not to mention his big sisters who are always asking for a turn, too. Sometimes they let his Dad hold him, too... This is one of those pictures that would probably be better off left in the bottom drawer of my hard drive ... not very well composed, out of focus, oddly cropped. But I really felt like sharing it with you anyway. This is why I do what I do. This is the reward for days and weeks and months and years of sleepless nights and sticky fingers and endless laundry and changing nappies. This is why we do it, why a mother gets up every single day and just keeps going. This is one of those countless moments that more than make up for the fatigue, the worry, the very hard work that is being a parent. More than worth it. : ) Levi, 14 months, running to give me (and my camera) a hug.

A perfect, gloomy, rainy spring day here in South Africa (my favourite) full of lovely, soft, luminous light for portraits. And I haven't done one of these in ages. Mila is getting all grown up, every time I turn around she is taller and smarter and more independent. One day I'm going to be really happy I did these offbeat and otherwise portraits, even though the colours are strange, they are full of the essence of Mila.
