A stile on a winter's walk

From across the gorge, I noticed this stile and pathway slightly comforted by two windswept trees and in an instant I knew there was a capture to be had. I switched out lenses to shoot a little tighter with a vintage 85mm Jupiter f/2 lens and stopped down to help with contrast and sharpness. Fine focus was then achieved using Sony A7 mirrorless in camera technique and monochrome or black and white setting. Seldom am I happy with black and white for landscapes ~ but I rather think this works... :)

To walk in the Lake District National Park, in the UK, you will encounter the stiles that prevent the sheep that live on the mountains from wandering too far. They vary in style but they are stiles nevertheless. This one resides near Blea Tarn, a most picture-perfect place. As I recall, the British Standards Institute has a standard for stiles. It doesn't define what they must look like but only their functional purpose.

This image, captured on film in late 1987, depicts the mountain called High Stile from across the head of Buttermere, a lake in the Lake District National Park, England. I was visiting the UK and took a few days to go up to Cumbria for a few days of walking in the mountains. It was a wonderfully clear late autumn day so the trees were bare. The bracken on the hills had died back but was still a deep but yet vibrant brown, glowing in the bright autumnal light. The very hardy heather and grasses at higher elevations were still full of colour making the scene so splendid, and the lake was calm with just a few ripples from the gentle breezes. It was a sight to behold.
