Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) looking for food near the bank of River Wansbeck in Northumberland. The fine calm morning produced a lovely reflection in the water and the greenery along the river bank made a lovely background to this impressive bird.

This beautiful Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) was photographed among the reeds on Queen Elizabeth II Lake, Ashington, Northumberland. These birds are usually very skittish, but this one was fairly co-operative and allowed me to get quite close.

This Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) was one of five feeding on Holywell Pond, Northumberland and very conveniently took flight after I was ready with my camera.

As winter takes its toll on wildlife the estuaries are kept busy with wildlife sheltering from the blustery cold winds and foraging for food... essential fats necessary for keeping warm can be found as 'tasty morsels' hidden within the reeds... This Grey Heron almost looks a tad blue in the light... Who knows, maybe he's cold and the plumage changes its iridescence towards winter..?

THE GREAT BLUE GREY HERON FISHING SPLASH DIVER !

Inspired by the slate blue grey colours and hues that I often see in such a beautiful bird. UK's biggest wading bird, the grey heron, admittedly I often mistakenly speak of as blue heron due to its beautiful blue brilliance and iridescence... With this thinking in mind, I wanted to capture something that emphasised as such and drew upon 'the body architecture' of such a magnificent bird! So for the past few months at least I have been stalking this stork, or rather heron! Keeping very mindful of its biology, behaviour and ecology and trying to in all instances ~ give it the breathing space that it needs... as being respectful of wildlife - is of paramount importance, when wildlife photography and art is concerned. Decided to add this to portfolio not because of the artistic merit of the work but because its unusual to see a grey heron with a nice plaice in its mouth... Luckily, this one was quite slippy and a bit of a mouthful for this grey heron and so I took time to get this frame as I wanted it using telephoto hybrid lens, so I wasn't expecting miracles and the colour artefacting wasn't good - so I've had to work in post to correct it... but I do like the slight watercolour effect produced... :-)

Actually its not all emotional stress for grey herons... far from it... the pairing bonds that they make are often secured by offering not a ring... but a stick... They obviously don't do - materialism!

I am sure we have Great Blue Heron and Grey Heron on the shores of Caernarfon and up the estuary... This image was taken at the Glaslyn Wildlife centre whilst on an Osprey lookout... Didn't spot any ospreys close enough to be able to get a decent shot, so I dipped out with my Pentax 560mm f/5.6 dedicated wildlife lens for a spot of river photography and saw this grey heron purely focussed on fishing and getting a prey item!

There are many shades of grey in a grey heron... Often I think this, and wonder why at times that it's not called a blue heron, because of the brilliance of blue hues that you get within their feathers. Maybe its because grey is the dominant colour - but I don't see this. I decided to work on this piece to better reflect this idea and have toiled with the piece in justifying it in my own minds eye as art... but that I suppose is not for me to decide and so - I continued with it... Deeper shades of grey - that is blue!

A colourful male grey heron seems to sit high up within the treetops as if to say to the slightly smaller female... "hi honey, why don't you come up and see me sometime...?"
