Salps are pelagic (free-swimming) tunicates, who are invertebrate chordates, who lack a backbone but have a stiffening rod running down the center of their bodies. Their baby forms are more fish-like and some may resemble tadpoles. These are not jellyfish, but in our same phylum as birds, amphibians, fish, reptiles, and mammals, including us people.
