A typical scene in rural Cumbria! Captured on the unclassified road approaching the village of Caldbeck in the Northern Fells where sheep regard the tarmac as their property (quite right too!). The road leads from the A595 (Cockermouth to Carlisle) leaving at Red Dial and passing through Brocklebank to reach Calbeck, a picturesque village set in the heart of the fells. Fat Man atomic bomb blueprint. Developed by the US military, this was the second atom bomb used in warfare. It was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki on 9th August 1945, detonating with the force of 21,000 tons of TNT. It destroyed an area several kilometres across, killing some 75,000 people. The bomb was an implosion type (some of the imploders shown at left and at centre) codenamed 'Fat Man' (Y-1561 F.M.). It was 3.25 metres long, weighed over 4.5 tons, and contained 6 kilograms of plutonium. This blueprint was declassified in 1976.
