Whitby Abbey And Graveyard Of St Mary's Church A recent trip to the East Yorkshire coast would have been incomplete without a visit to Whitby. This fishing town has it all, a fantastic town and harbour, lots of shops and 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey And Graveyard Of St Mary's Church. Did I mention the links to Dracula? The sky was amazing and the gravestones gave a great foreground interest to this timeless landscape at the top of the cliff. Whitby Marina And Harbor And Abbey And Church On the way in to Whitby we always cross a bridge some way out but as you look over the edge, this is the view. I had to park quite a way from the bridge to be safe and walk back down to take this vista of Whitby. Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts. By Paul Thompson Photography

Whitby Abbey And Tombstones A perfect backdrop for Halloween. Photograph taken from within the Churchyard that overlooks Whitby Abbey to one side and the harbor to the other. I found the gravestones framed the Abbey perfectly and added a spooky bit of eeriness that already surrounds the Abbey given it's links to Dracula.
