The regiment was constituted 21 August 1965, in the regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 10th Aviation Battalion. The Battalion was activated 23 August 1965 at Fort Benning, GA and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th Aviation Battalion on 1 December 1968. 10th Aviation was an important contributor to the United States Army’s efforts in Vietnam. The unit provided critical Aviation support in the first Tet counter-offensive and distinguished itself by successfully fulfilling this vital role. 10th Aviation regularly repeated this standard for success in the intervening years and was recognized for valorous acts at Dak To and Tuy Hoa Valley. The 10th Cavalry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army. Formed as a segregated African-American unit, the 10th Cavalry was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments in the post–Civil War Regular Army. It served in combat during the Indian Wars in the western United States, the Spanish–American War in Cuba and in the Philippine–American War. The regiment was trained as a combat unit but later relegated to non-combat duty and served in that capacity in World War II until its deactivation in 1944. The regiment have served in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The 210th Aviation Battalion was partially formed from the assets of the provisional CAPITAL Aviation battalion at Tan Son Nhut and served with the 1st Aviation Battalion . On 15 January 1966 the battalion was assigned to the 12th Aviation Group and moved to Long Thanh. In July 1971 the unit was transferred to the 165th Aviation Group. It provided fixed wing airfraft support to III Corps and IV CTZ.
