Boats At Goring On Thames Tank Tops

Boats moored on the Thames riverside just above the old mill at Goring-on-Thames. Just above here the river divides with the navigation channel passing through the lock next to Goring and Streatley weir. Here though it passes under the road bridge before rushing through the sluices and through Goring Mill. But here all is calm, the moorings fronting old half timbered buildings which house amoung other things a dental surgery. It's been a hot summer resulting in a build-up of green weed.

The River Thames as it flows between the villages of Streatley in Berkshire, England to the south and Goring in Oxfordshire to the north. This is a break between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. This is the view looking west from the bridge. Moored on the left is one of the old Oxford College barges - now an events venue for the hotel on the river bank. To the right the Thames rushes over the weir, boats passing through the lock. The scene looking eastwards along the River Thames from the road bridge at Goring-on-Thames on the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border. A variety of river boats are moored along the towpath which is part of the Thames Path long-distance trail. A launch is heading towards to lock and a couple of paddle boarders are moving downstream. Here the Thames flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs.

The lock keeper's house on an island next to the lock at Goring on Thames, Oxfordshire. This is the view from the southerly river bank at Streatley on Thames in Berkshire. Linking these two villages is a fine iron bridge built in 1923 which can be seen in the background. Here the Thames flows through a gap in the hills - the Chilterns to the north and the North Wessex Downs to the south, This is thought to be one of the most beautiful; stretches of the river. This area is a favourite of artists with canvas and/or camera - including the great JMW Turner. The Thames Path - a long distance National Trail - stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in London.

The backwater as the Thames divides above the lock and weir at Goring on Thames in Oxfordshire. This was once the supply of water to the mill where it still rushes through the sluices to the wheel pit. Here, beside the boathouses lining the river bank, craft of all types are moored - now probably for the winter! In this view captured on a day in early October the lock keeper's cottage can be seen in the background.

Here the river divides, the main stream passing through the lock (just behind us) and rushing over the weir whilst this branch once turned the millwheel. Boats are frequently moored here and opposite are some recently refurbished boathouses and a row of black and white buildings which houses the dentist's surgery! It's a late afternoon in August and the low sun lights up the scene just below the lock and weir. Here the Thames is passing through the Goring Gap - an opening between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs - before flowing past Pangbourne and Reading en route to London and the sea. Not surprisingly this area has been a haunt for artists - including JMW Turner!
