Over the last week as I worked on this portrait, I debated with myself over what to title this one. Initially, I was going to go with 'The Madman.' Then I considered 'The Dichotomy' because the 11th Doctor was both young and old. 'The Hipster' because his aesthetic style sort of reflected the current hipster trends. 'The Chin' because that's what several characters called him. And a few others. I landed on 'The Promise.' The longest running narrative thread in Doctor Who is the title. Nobody knows the Doctor's real name (save River Song and one other person, which I assume is his first wife). It's sort of a running (meta)joke where characters often ask, 'Doctor? Doctor who?' A few trees decided it was too hot on this summer's day and decided to go for a bit of swim in the Bow River. In actuality, they were probably taken down by the floods less than a month before.

Snow and ice battling to cover the Bow River at Lake Louise in mid-November. It did eventually win in sections of the river, but the Bow was still flowing strong on this day. The thing I noticed most in this scene was how the snow covered the rocks on the island, turning what would have been pristine, flat snow into white blobs all along the riverbank.

I headed out from Cave & Basin with a small group of fellow hikers on an overcast morning, but by the time we made it to this spot on the Bow River, the weather had turned. The river was calm, Cascade Mountain was white with fresh snow, and the sun was warm. Perfection!

There are so many stunning places to hike in Banff in summer, but if you're looking for the most sweeping view with the least walking, the top of Sulphur Mountain is definitely your best option. A quick gondola ride and a kilometre of walking along the boardwalk gets you this amazing view up the Bow River!

Location: Surprise Corner, Banff, Canada The sun rises over the foggy valley behind the Fairmont Banff Springs, as seen from the lookout at Surprise Corner on the other side of the (very frozen) Bow River.

I've visited this spot on the shoreline of the Bow River a lot in the last year, mainly on photography workshops but a number of times on my own as well. I definitely prefer it in winter, when you can easily access the rock pools without having to take off your boots and wade through the ice-cold river! Despite having been here regularly, though, it was only last month that I was finally able to get a photo that I felt truly showed what an amazing place this is, as well as what an impressive mountain Castle Mountain really is. You've got to love that golden light of winter!

I knew the view from the top of the Banff Gondola was supposed to be good, but I didn't realise quite how good it was until we went up on a picture-perfect day. Given our other two days in Banff alternated between clouds and storms, I think we timed it quite well!

The crags of Castle Mountain lit by the sun of an early November morning in Banff National Park. I find this mountain to be one of the most fascinating on the drive between Banff and Lake Louise; with every corner turned, it reveals a new face more interesting than the last.

Golden hour lighting up all of my favourite things about Banff National Park: the mountain slopes, the Bow River below, and the wide swathes of forest in between.

I had to be very careful to compose my shot and make sure that I didn't step on any of the perfect baubles of snow all along the shoreline at Castle Junction! I love the look of fresh snow when you can still see the shapes (and occasional peeks) of what it is covering.
