The 26th Cavalry Regiment was created on October 1, 1922 in the Philippine Department. It functioned independently of any cavalry brigade or division. The 26th Cavalry Regiment, consisting mostly of Philippine Scouts, was the last U.S. Cavalry Regiment to engage in horse-mounted warfare. Their last mounted charge occurred at the town of Morong on January, 16 1942. The unit fought desperate rearguard actions both mounted and dismounted against the Japanese army throughout the American withdraw in the Philippines. Elements were enveloped by Japanese forces on Bataan and forced to surrender on April 9, 1942. Certain other elements of the regiment avoided the surrender at Corregidor and persisted in guerrilla warfare after the May 6, 1942

The M551 Sheridan was an air droppable, amphibious, reconnaissance, tank used by the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1996. It was armed with a 152mm Gun-missile launcher and two machine guns. The M551 saw combat service in Vietnam, Panama, and Kuwait/Iraq. After being retired from frontline service, many were converted into VISMOD vehicles and used as opposing force tanks at the National Training Center, Ft. Irwin, California.

Today in Vietnam, various scout dog platoons are in wide use among infantry units. The 1st Infantry Division is no exception. They are supported by the 35th at Dian and the 41st Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) stationed at Lai Khe.

1966–1973: Approximately 5,000 US war dogs served in the Vietnam War (the US Army did not retain records prior to 1968); about 10,000 US servicemen served as dog-handlers during the war, and the K9 units are estimated to have saved over 10,000 human lives. 232 military working dogs and 295 US servicemen working as dog handlers were killed in action during the war. It is estimated that about 200 Vietnam War dogs survived the war to be assigned at other US bases outside the US. The remaining canines were euthanized or left behind.

The 15th Cavalry Regiment was reorganized as the 15th Cavalry Group, Mechanized. The 15th landed on Utah beach on the 5th of July 1944 as part of Patton’s Third Army. The 15th served in four major campaigns in Europe: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. The 15th fought as part of the Third Army, Ninth Army and was assigned as a security force for several different Divisions. The end of the war found the Regiment deep inside Germany, covering over 1000 miles of enemy held territory since landing on the continent in July 1944. The 15th had taken nearly 7000 prisoners, destroyed 78 guns and 495 enemy vehicles.

The use of dogs as an auxiliary in-war is as old as war itself. Primitive man used dogs to guard his family, his belongings and himself. He also took his dog into battle with him when rival tribes clashed. Throughout the history of warfare, dogs have gone into combat at the side of their masters or have been used in direct support of combat operations. In May 1942 the Army established the K-9 Corps. Throughout World War II, 595 dogs were trained for scouting duties. Some of the canine established distinguished records and were officially cited for outstanding and faithful service. The Army has employed various breeds of dog, and have determined the German Shepherd to be the most suitable for scouting.

25th Infantry Platoon Scout Dogs (Bien Hoa) (An Khe)

The 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry (3-4 Cavalry, or popularly known as "Three-Quarter Horse" or "Mackenzie's Riders" after Ranald S. Mackenzie) acted as the reconnaissance squadron for the 25th Infantry Division. Deploying to Vietnam on 24 March 1966, the men were based at Cu Chi Base Camp northwest of Saigon, while Troop C served with the division's 3rd Brigade in the Central Highlands.
