Chemical Beach Tank Tops

Sun rising over the Old Chemical Beach, located on the north east coast of England, slightly south of Seaham Harbour. The name was given to the area during the times of the old chemical works that are situated on the cliff tops. The area still shows the remnants of the industrial heritage.

The locally named Chemical Beach at Seaham Harbour on the County Durham Coast of northern England is named after the old chemical works that was located close to the cliffs in the 1800's. The waste from the works ran in pipes to the sea where is was disgorged. Over the years, much work has been carried out to create clean beaches. However, signs of the old damage persist. The area can produce almost alien looking images at both sunrise and sunset.

A surprisingly unnamed magnesian limestone sea stack on the Durham coast. The beach on which it sits, south of Seaham, is named after the Seaham Chemical Works which occupied the immediate cliff top for a short time. It was established in the 1860s, by the 1890s it had gone. But Chemical Beach continued to be abused. The sand was extensively removed by the Seaham and Londonderry Bottle Works to make glass and coal waste from the Dawdon Pit was dumped into the sea. The beach and cliff top have been cleaned up. Natural is recovering. The magnesian limestone provides a rare habitat for flora and butterflies and is under the protection of the National Trust.

The Blast Beach as it is locally known, is located just south of Seaham Harbour, in the area of Noses Point on the County Durham coastline of North East England. The beach was once a dumping ground for the old waste from the mines and chemical works - with the Chemical Beach, being close by. The sea stack, is unusual in that it has never been named.

The old wagon wheels are a set of wheels that are visible at low tide on the old 'Chemical Beach' situated at Seaham Harbour on the north east coast of England. They are from an old wagon that used to run along a line from the area of the old chemical works to the harbours. The slow shutter of what was a fantastic sky adds to the character of the image.

The Heritage Cost, has a number of little bays in the area, the beaches vary from rock and shingle to soft sand. Here the view is over the older beaches, that were used as a dumping ground for the waste materials of the mines and the chemical factory of Seahams industrial past. The wooden uprights show the route the old wagons took to the dumping areas. All cleaned now and beaches that have been awarded Blue Flag status.
