Irwindale Raceway, was located unironically in Irwindale, California, and opened up in 1965 just after the San Gabriel Drag Strip closed in 1963. Compared to the likes of Orange County and Lions, Irwindale wasn’t a fancy track by any means, but had its charms to say the least. Irwindale the place to be in Southern California on a Saturday night and thanks to the (then) remote location, they ran well into the small hours and the crowds were there for it! Like all too many drag strips, pressure by development ruined a good thing. In 1977, the City of Irwindale bought the property and essentially gave it away for development of a large brewery facility.

With hopes of breaking the Big Two’s lock, Plymouth hired Dan Gurney’s All American Racers in Santa Ana, Calif., to build a Trans-Am ‘Cuda. It was more than competitive, winning it’s fair share of races. For 1970, Plymouth decided to honor those achievements on the track with a dealer-only street car option called the AAR, which stands for All-American Racers. The result was the 1970 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda, Plymouth’s factory built race car. Has there ever been a more in-your-face vehicle built in North America? Three carburetors, fiberglass hood and spoiler, side exit exhaust and eye popping graphics made the Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda impossible to ignore.

They made pretty much everything from innovative dual spark plug adapters and custom heads to adjustable suspension bracketry and carburetor performance kids. They eventually used their motocross expertise to enter the emerging BMX market. Webco mags were distinctive 5 spokers and their attempts at suspension frames were considered highly innovative for the time.
