On occasion, Fiordland Penguins have been known to find themselves a little off course, swept by the prevailing ocean currents from their home on the south east coast of New Zealand to Australia. As it is unlikely that they would be able to make it back to New Zealand on their own, there is now a small group of Fiordland Penguins at Sydney's Taronga Zoo. Can you think of many things better than kayaking on a calm lake as the sun sets behind the mountains? Because I can't. Seems like these guys, out kayaking on Lake Te Anau during Christmas break, definitely had it made.

What's it like to stand underneath New Zealand's tallest waterfall? Well, you can't hear anything but the roar of the falls as the water hurtles from 580m above you, and you get a shower too -- which feels wonderful if you've just spent the last 3 days hiking in the backcountry! This waterfall is an hour's walk off the main Milford Track but it is well worth it. After you've crossed Mackinnon Pass, you'll find Quintin Lodge -- the hut for the guided walkers. From here, signs will direct you off to the left to the falls. This turnoff is about 45 minutes before you reach the independent walkers' hut.

It’s hard to put the feeling of being in Milford Sound into words. It all seemed so much larger than life; the mountains, the waterfalls, and the sky all made me feel so minuscule…but in the most jaw-dropping way possible. I was lucky enough to be there during a summer that had been extremely dry, which meant I’d had perfect blue skies for my entire trek down the Milford Track and into the Sound itself. However, that also meant that I didn’t get to see the walls of the fiord turn into a myriad of waterfalls or see the clouds creeping slowly up the sound. I was okay with that though, because, well, how could I not be with this view?

This waterfall lies deep in outstandingly beautiful rainforest and flows from a lake, high in the mountains of Fiordland, New Zealand. Milford Sound must have known that I wanted to take photos the day I was there, since it was not only overcast but low tide as well! I didn't mind too much though, since this photo really epitomises Milford Sound -- spectacular landscapes and not-so-spectacular weather!

The stunning view looking back towards the Clinton Valley from Mackinnon Pass. I was so lucky to have perfect weather for my entire 4 days on the Milford Track.

I stayed in campsites along this river for about three weeks. I think, of al the spots, this campsite was my favorite. I spent Christmas Day here. I took a lot of photos.
