A corner of London, where the light bounces off the white stucco and the sky is a cool blue, jacket weather, air that bites. A day of freedom, a day of walking and exploring, seeking out quiet streets, forgotten it seems, but the day is early. This work depicts a café on a street corner, a gentle game of shadow and light, seeped in blue and white. A perfect souvenir of London.

A long walk on hot streets, the smell of tar and London plain. On a corner, a pub, a play of shadow and light, of colour, blue sky and purple stucco. The bricks reflect the light, golden almost. Inside we can seek shade, refreshment, in dark shadow and cosy nooks. The work is rich in light, in gentle yet vivid colour, a wonderful souvenir of London, a great gift.

The Bell, Walthamstow

A favorite walk, a place of constant return, unchanging, the gentle assurance of history and memory. Here I find a wonderful café with cream cakes and silver tea pots and faded, retro beauty, A portal to another decade, to another time. I am transfixed by the blue and the pink stucco, and by the vivid colors of the shop fronts. This is my secret corner of London that forever belongs to me. The painting is a wonderful gift of London and a perfect addition to any collection.

I loved the contrasts and shades, the lime green, faded, retro, pistachio pudding, cream and custard, pealing, layers of memories and decades past. There is a sadness to Paddington. Perhaps it reminds me of childhood tales of abandoned bears, a memory of a never to return family holiday to Cornwall, sitting in a first class dining car with silver coffee pots and an English breakfast. Memories of a lonely and confusing first year at college, taking a late train back to a depressing suburb. Victorian buildings, hospital wards with broken windows and dirt encrusted window sills. A little corner of London. And yet the sky is blue, hot and bright. The windows reflecting blue, shadows gathering in the street below.

London, Westminster, Coventry Street, Souvenir Shops Coventry Street in theatreland, City of Westminster, London W1, UK, England. This busy street photography scene was so hectic with detail that converting it to black and white has simplified the image and concentrates the the mind in to what is on sale and who is just passing by. I really enjoy street photography where I can stand back and not have to get in to somebody's face to get the shot that I want. Many years ago, as a student, I used to live in Deptford. It felt exciting, new, fresh and edgy. An intensity of sights and colour, shops of bright and exotic produce, music that rattled and alternative bookshops in damp, decaying spaces that seemed full of promise. Life moved on and so did I, and one day I returned, to briefly reconnect with my old self, with times gone by, a Proustian moment of bitter sweetness. This work depicts a row of shops, simple and full of character. The work is a great souvenir of London.

A place that never seems to change, that always offers the same, a simple choice, to be taken or left, over decades. I cannot remember when I first saw this café and I don’t think I have ever eaten here, but I am glad it exists, an anchor, a source of Proustian scent, of bacon, toast, grease and coffee. I pause to look at the choices, taunting myself, mulling the range of cheese sandwiches, ham, peanut butter and more. Beyond London stretches outwards, and I make ready to move on, into Bloomsbury or up to Kings Cross. But for this moment I inhale once more the scent of the full English. A lovely gift from London, a fantastic souvenir, rich in detail, in colour and in atmosphere.
