Malmesbury Abbey Malmesbury Abbey, in the English county of Wiltshire, was founded in AD 675 by an Irishman named Maildubh, and the town of Malmesbury was once one of the most important in the country. The building you see today is the third abbey on this site and originates from the 12th century. It once had a spire 23 feet taller than that of Salisbury Cathedral, but unfortunately it collapsed in the late 1400s or earlier 1500s. The Abbey is the burial place of Athelstan, who is widely acknowledged as being the first King of England. Date: 1st June 2017.

A study of a section of the magnificent Malmesbury Abbey. Situated in Wiltshire, England, the Abbey was founded around 676 as a Benedictine Monastery. The pretty town grew around the monastery and is now a thriving market town.
