The peacock butterfly (Aglais io) is a butterfly (butterfly) from the noble butterfly family (Nymphalidae). The species name is derived from Io, a lover of Zeus from Greek mythology. The peacock butterfly was voted Butterfly of the Year in 2009. The moths have a wingspan of 50 to 55 millimeters. They have a rust-red wing color. The most distinctive and most striking feature are the black, blue and yellow colored eye spots on each front and hind wing tip. Those of the forewings are more clearly colored with a dark spot on the inside. In addition, there are larger black and white spots on the upper wing edge, which are closely patterned in white...

This beautiful species of butterfly I found most difficult to photograph purely because of the brilliance of irradiance and intense colour! Getting the capture just as I wanted to be represented in a slightly painted way yet remaining true to accuracy without the camera picking up every irregularity by the camera was quite tricky and so the angle of incidence of light became most critical. Luckily, this species was quite happy to sit there just basking in a mix of dappled shade and early evening sun and I waited for a shot where the tops of its wings captured by the light - just started to glow... Returning to look at the shots taken afterwards I noticed that my exposure wasn't adequate enough and so I have had to work quite heavi...

I spotted this peacock butterfly whilst out for a wander along Winchester's Magdalene hill (England). The place is chalk downland - a scarp slope, facing South and maintained for nature and especially butterflies. It was May, and so this specimen had over-wintered and looked a little bedraggled for it, I found it reluctant to pose for the photo from which this was painted, but eventually it gave in and opened its wings for me. The Peacock is a familiar sight in gardens across the British Isles and is unmistakable, with quite spectacular eyes on the upper side of the hind wings that give this butterfly its name. These eyes must appear very threatening to predators, image taken in the shirebrook valley sheffield .

Peacock Butterfly drinking nectar from a Buddleia. These can live for up to 11 months and prefer to live in nettle beds. Usually this plant attracts Painted Ladies and this is the first time I’ve seen Peacock butterflies visiting the garden. This was just one of a half dozen or so around yesterday afternoon.
