Born and raised in Amherst, Ohio, John Penton was one of the most influential figures in the development of off-road motorcycle racing in America during the '60s and ‘70s. As a national champion rider, Penton went on to develop a legendary brand of off-road motorcycles that bore his name and defined an industry. His innovations were not reserved exclusively for the manufacture of motorcycles, however. Wanting to improve on the standard work boot that most off-road riders wore in the early days of motocross, He approached an Italian ski boot maker about modifying their boots for motorcycle use. The result was his groundbreaking 'Hi-Point' boots that would later be made by his second company, Hi-Point Racing Products.

When you think of Sonoma, California, road racing is probably one of the last things on the list, but that all changed in when two friends conceived the idea of a racetrack while on a hunting trip in the southern Sonoma Mountains in 1967. Located at Sears Point in Sonoma County, California, the original 2.520 mile road racing course was constructed on 720 acres and opened on December 1, 1968, with the hosting SCCA Enduro. Featuring 12 turns on a hilly course with 160 ft. of total elevation change, the track is still considered one of America's greatest road racing tracks. The track was renamed Golden State International Raceway, and saw a couple more name changes decades later, but is still in operation today as the Sonoma Raceway.
