n the vast majority of the islands of the Aegean their "capitals" are called "Hora" (or "Chora"). Most of the Horas are located in the interior of the island, high up on some hill, relatively far from the sea. The main reasons, were defensive reasons, as the people of the islands wanted to avoid attacks from the pirates that once upon a time were lurking the Archipelago. Of course there are some exceptions. For example, the "Hora" of Myconos is a seaside town, because the Myconians used to do business with the pirates, or in some cases were pirates themselves. SERIFOS ISLAND, CYCLADES, AEGEAN SEA, GREECE. An old, abandoned jetty used for loading minerals to ships at Mega Livadi village.

The Hora of Serifos is divided in 2 parts, in 2 neighbourhoods, the Ano (Upper) Hora and the Kato (lower) Hora. In this photo you can see the square (Piazza) of Ano Hora, where you can see on the background the only building that's not white and blue, and it's the Town Hall.

Here you can see the 2 parts, the 2 neighborhoods of the Hora ("Capital") of Serifos island. On the left side, you can see the Ano (Upper) Hora, the old part, which was "hidden" on the back of the hill, far from the eyes of the pirates. On the right side of hill, lies the Kato (Lower) Hora, the "newer", "visible" part, where the colorful church, makes a great contrast with the white little houses. Deeper, on sea level, you can see a different village, called Livadi, which is the islands' harbor. In the background, on the horizon you can see a another beautiful island of the Kyklades, Sifnos. Photo taken from the "Miners' path". It is the path that starts from the Hora of Serifos and after a 2-2 and half hour walk goes to Mega Livad...

I love the Greek island I come from, Serifos. This amazingly beautiful island's icon are its frogs. I created this art in homenage of these two and came out realy cute, what do you think?
