West Adams, historically, refers to a sub-region of Los Angeles centered along West Adams Boulevard. Today, it also refers to a newer neighborhood of South Los Angeles, also bisected by West Adams. Thus, this map is distinguished as "Historic West Adams."

I drew this map of Asian American-dominated suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley in the style of 18th Century Chinese Cartographer, Mo Yi Tong. Boyle Heights is a neighborhood on Los Angeles's Eastside. Once it was thought of as the "Ellis Island of the West," on account of its diverse population of Jews, Japanese, Russians, Mexicans, and others. Leimert Park was created by Walter H. Leimert as a whites-only neighborhood in 1928. However, it has long been a significant cultural hub of Los Angeles's black community.

Manchester Square is a neighborhood in South Los Angeles's Westside. It was home of the notorious Monster Cody and Grim Sleeper. On a lighter note, it's also home to Art's Chili Dog, established in 1939 and said by some to be the birthplace of the chili dog.

Rose Hill is a small neighborhood in Los Angeles's Eastside, nestled between Lincoln Heights, Happy Valley, and El Sereno. I explored it, with my feline companion, Dooley, in 2014. https://ericbrightwell.com/2014/01/21/with-shanty-pads-squatting-on-mud-hills-exploring-rose-hill/

Compton is a city in the South Los Angeles region. It is the 7th oldest (by incorporation) and 16th most-populous in Los Angeles County. Future presidents George H.W. and George W. lived there in 1949 and '50. It is famous for the Compton Cowboys of Richland Farms and the Compton Cricket Club, among other things. In 2014, a CicLAvia event took place in South Los Angeles. I went, naturally, and painted this map for my series, "Nobody Drives in LA." https://ericbrightwell.com/2014/12/03/previewing-ciclavia-south-la-a-california-fools-gold-guide-to-history-and-attractions/

The brewery did well in the 1930s and 1940s. It was a regional beer judging from where their cans have been dumped, mostly southern California and Arizona. Zobelein died in 1936 and his son took over the brewery. They introduced cans in 1937 choosing flat tops such as my can-of-the-month above. They sold Eastside Beer, Eastside Ale, and in 1939 introduced a premium beer called Luxury Extra Dry Pilsner. Eastside Beer remained their big seller however. (Eastside Ale cans are quite scarce and Luxury was never canned). They also canned Brown Derby Beer for Safeway stores in the 1930s.

The Islander, was a Hawaiian style, Tiki bar & restaurant in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. Famed for it’s mid-century modern A-frame architecture, bridge entry & flaming torches. Unfortunately this slice of Polynesian Style & 1960s Americana was demolished in the 1980s. But you can still celebrate it with this T-Shirt from ryte TRACK.

Watts is a neighborhood in South Los Angeles's Eastside. It's still best known for the Watts Towers (built 1921-1954 ) and the Watts Riots (1965). Lots has changed in the intervening half century, needless to say, and I explored and mapped in 2014 for my series, "California Fool's Gold" https://ericbrightwell.com/2014/02/14/more-than-just-riots-and-towers/

Canterbury Knolls is a neighborhood on South Los Angeles's Westside. I explored, for my series, "California Fool's Gold," in 2014. It's probably most known as the home of the Slauson Super Mall (better known, still, as the Slauson Swap Meet). https://ericbrightwell.com/2009/12/01/california-fools-gold-exploring-canterbury-knolls/

South Pasadena is a small suburban city located, naturally, to the south of Pasadena. It, however improbably, retains and exudes a rather small-town feel which leads to its often portraying small towns in the Midwest on television and in film.
